Asphalt Repair and ReplacementAn overview of asphalt repair: Hot mix asphalt is a mixture of approximately 5% liquid asphalt cement binder, 95% rock and sand. When the three ingredients are combined they will form a flexible, yet durable wear surface. However, there are three elements that will damage asphalt on a consistent basis. Those elements are water, sunlight, and petroleum spills in the form of gasoline and oil. These three elements will breakdown the asphalt and eventually cause its failure. With the extreme climate changes we work with in Minnesota water freeze and thaw is a primary culprit in damaging asphalt. Once water begins to penetrate asphalt it will seep to the sub base causing the sub-base to “soften” and become even more flexible. The asphalt surface will only flex so much and in time it will crack. When water freezes it creates 3200 PSI of pressure, which in turn moves the asphalt away from buildings, curbs, and creates potholes allowing more water damage sinking and cracking. Obviously as each season progresses the issue will continue to manifest itself into a major problem. When your asphalt has reached a point of no return it must be removed and replaced with either new asphalt or concrete. In order to achieve the best results it is recommended that the sub-base of limestone base rock be at least 4 to 8 inches be installed and thoroughly compacted prior to installation of new material. This sub-base will not flex as much as compacted soil and will allow water to drain through on a consistent basis. A properly installed sub-base will also provide the needed structural support for the new surface. Truseal Americas asphalt division has a standing policy of removing old asphalt and adding additional base to achieve the proper sub-base depths before replacing with new material. Our equipment is designed to be less invasive when working in town home communities yet we are still able to get the job done efficiently on a timely manner. Our specialty is asphalt apron repair. We understand sub-base issues, water issues, and how to provide a strong finished product. We will always work within a schedule when on a specific site to facilitate customer needs and traffic concerns.
